Willa Mae Altes, born Willa Mae Cowen on October 27, 1941, in Wheatland, Missouri, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2025, in Kansas City, Missouri, at the age of 83. Willa was a devoted mother and grandmother whose life centered around her family. She graduated from Mack’s Creek High School and spent most of her life as a stay-at-home mom, dedicating her time and energy to raising her children and nurturing the generations that followed. Her home was a place of warmth, laughter, and love. A gathering spot for family where memories were made and traditions were cherished. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Delbert and Bonnie Cowen; brothers, Johnny Cowen and Charles Cowen; sisters, Mary Lou Stoner, Bonnie Bell Saluto, and Marie Dibben; her husband Johnny Altes; and two beloved grandchildren, Kyle Mamerow and Austin Colston. Willa is lovingly remembered by her children Dean Colston; Rick (Jeaneen) Colston; Steve (Shanie) Colston; Donald (Rebecca) Colston; Brian Colston; Rhonda Howard; Gary Colston; Lawrence (Elizabeth) Allen; Kevin (Courtney) Allen. Her legacy continues through her 31 grandchildren and approximately 47 great-grandchildren, each one a testament to the love she poured into her family. Known affectionately as “Granny,” Willa found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She had a deep love for both playing and singing music, cooking, casino visits, enjoying card games with loved ones, watching wrestling, and Kansas City Chiefs games with enthusiasm. Her vibrant spirit brought joy and tons of laughs to those around her. A woman of faith, Willa was a follower of Christ who was saved at an early age at Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Her faith remained a guiding light throughout her life. Willa’s unwavering devotion to her family will be remembered by all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those she leaves behind.
