Sue Oden, 88, of Unionville, Missouri, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2025, at the Putnam County Care Center after a brief stay.
Sue was born in a rural farmhouse near Cincinnati, Iowa, on January 27, 1937, the daughter of Elmer and Lola Irene (Abell) Proffitt. She graduated as Valedictorian from Numa High School, where her intelligence and determination shone early.
On June 5, 1955, she married Larry Weston in Numa. Together they built a beautiful life rooted in family, laughter, and community until Larry’s passing on April 7, 2004. In later years, Sue found companionship and joy again with Donald Oden, whom she married on August 19, 2008. Though their time together was short, Sue often said they made the most of every day—traveling, antiquing, laughing, and enjoying every good meal they could find.
As a young woman, Sue volunteered as a Girl Scout leader and carried that same giving spirit throughout her life. She was the kind of mother who never missed a single activity—school programs, ball games, or concerts—she was always there, front and center, cheering on her kids with pride. That same dedication carried over to her grandchildren, who could always count on Grandma Sue to be in the crowd.
Even as the years went on, she and Larry made it a point to show up—sometimes driving hours just to catch a game, a recital, or a school play. It didn’t matter what the event was or how far they had to go; if one of the kids was involved, Sue was going to be there. Her steady presence and constant encouragement became a cornerstone of her family’s life, a reflection of her belief that showing up is one of the greatest expressions of love.
Family was always Sue’s heart and purpose. She devoted her life to caring for those she loved—celebrating their wins, comforting them in their struggles, and reminding everyone, simply by example, what it means to love without condition.
Sue had a remarkable eye for fashion and design. Though she grew up a modest farmer’s daughter, she taught herself to sew and created beauty wherever she went—making all of Diane’s clothing when she was young, decorating her home, and uncovering hidden treasures in antique and flea market shops. She loved to surround herself with things that told a story—sparkling jewelry, well-loved books (thousands of them!), and one-of-a-kind crafts.
Between Larry and her, the internet was unnecessary; She and Larry were the ultimate DIY duo! With their skills, they could create anything they set their minds to, from sewing to building, and even developing new ideas. Her creativity and determination left a lasting mark on every home she touched.
More than anything, Sue will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to her family—her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the many others who were lucky enough to be loved by her. Her laughter, her style, and her thoughtful presence will be deeply missed.
Sue is survived by her daughter, Diane Robbins and husband Ron, and her son, Dan Weston and wife Ginger, all of Unionville, Missouri. Her beloved grandchildren are Lacey (Ian) Gilworth, Tiffani (Tristan) Klinginsmith, Corey Mason, Torey (Maddy) Weston, and Hilary (Mitchell) Tucker. Her great-grandchildren—Rory, T. Rush, Rowan, Jaxon, Brayden, Oden, Oliver, Mason, Hart, and Hayden—brought her endless joy.
She is also survived by her siblings David Proffitt of Exline, Iowa; Dona Richman of Fort Dodge, Iowa; and Danny Proffitt of Unionville, Iowa; along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews who loved her dearly.
Memorials are suggested to the Putnam County Athletic Booster Club, and checks may be made payable to the organization and entrusted to Thomas Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO 63565.
